What began as a companion piece in 2020, a program called "Fables," designed as part of our April 2020 Festival, has been tossed and turned and finally cannibalized into a footloose and fantastical new show called "Nuva." Nuva (aka The Nucleus) features the amazing Hai-Ting Chinn, and some rarely-heard masterpieces we've been itching to play for years, including surprising CP composer debuts (our first Barbara Strozzi! and our first Philip Glass!).

PROGRAM

Giovanni Battista Fontana - Sonata no 6

Klaus Lang - Der Weg des Prinzen I

Philip Glass - Music in Similar Motion

Barbara Strozzi - Lagrime mie

Rahilia Hasanova - Nuva

Featuring:

Hai-Ting Chinn, voice

Jacob Ashworth, baroque violin, modern violin, viola

Laura Cocks, flute
Maddy Fayette, cello

Sae Hashimoto, percussion

Gleb Kanasevich, clarinets

Cantata Profana presents its second show of the season! This concert will take place in the intimate Tenri Cultural Institute space on West 13th St and will honor the tradition of our dynamic, miniature-yet-epic Joe's Pub spotlight shows. This will be our last venture into the salon spotlight format, so make sure not to miss this one!

Our beloved John Taylor Ward rekindles the magic of this intimate series with an arresting show that centers around a piece that’s been on our bucket list for years: Iannis Xenakis' Kassandra. Ripped from a larger-scale opera and fitted as a chamber work in the 80s, Kassandra is a remarkable place from which to begin our show. From there, Taylor takes us on a further journey, with morcels from Italian art songs, baroque strains of Sigismondo d'India, and the unique, wondrous expressivity of Celeste Oram. Taylor teams up with the magnificent percussionist Jess Tsang for her CP debut, along with Daniel Schlosberg on keys, and Jacob Ashworth and Suliman Tekalli on fiddles.
