A note from Artistic Director Jacob Ashworth:
At the beginning of 2020, we were gearing up for our biggest and boldest event ever. A marathon three-day festival featuring a two-act monodrama, a brand new mainstage program, a film screening, lectures, talk-backs, and more.
What happened next is now an old, too-familiar story.
We optimistically postponed our April Festival to December and decided, with freelance artists’ incomes plummeting, to pay all our originally scheduled artists 25% of their fee, regardless of when or how we could perform the show. We launched our Summer Streaming Festival in the meantime, reconnecting over YouTube each week with our artists and audience. In the fall, we re-designed our Festival to meet the moment with smaller, modular programs. But when COVID-19 took a turn for the worse, we decided to stop looking into our crystal ball and cancel the Festival outright.
Here is what we do know: When the moment feels right, we want to be there to start paying artists again, to bring them back to New York, to enrich this city and our audience again with the only shows we know how to do — gloriously in-your-face, breathing, moving, vibrating, theatrical music.
It is thanks to supporters like you that we were in the financial position to offer something to our artists back in March, when so many others were unable to do so.
You have made it possible for us to survive this. We do not expect to raise record funds this year, but what we do need is to know that you are still with us. That we can count on you.
